The short answer It will cut your click volume, not your pipeline, if you move fast. Pew measured clicks on traditional results falling from 15% of visits to 8% when an AI summary appears. The short answer

It will cut your click volume, not your pipeline, if you move fast. Pew measured clicks on traditional results falling from 15% of visits to 8% when an AI summary appears. The offsetting fact is that AI-sourced visitors convert better, so the sane response is to change what you measure and what you publish.

What the click data actually shows

Pew tracked 68,879 Google searches from 900 US adults in March 2025 (Pew Research Center). Three numbers matter. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared. Users clicked a link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits. And sessions ended on 26% of pages carrying an AI summary versus 16% of pages with only traditional results.

That is a real contraction, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. Two pieces of context stop it becoming a panic. AI summaries appeared on 18% of the searches measured, not all of them. And the queries that trigger them skew informational: Semrush reports over 88% of AI Overview triggers are informational, with commercial queries at 8.69% and transactional at 1.76% (Semrush AI SEO statistics).

Read that carefully. The traffic most exposed is the top-of-funnel explainer traffic that was already the hardest to monetise. The bottom-of-funnel query where somebody types your service plus your city is far less affected.

The traffic you lose versus the traffic you keep

Query type Exposure to AI answers What to do
Definitional and how-it-works High. Over 88% of AI Overview triggers are informational Keep publishing for citation and brand, stop forecasting sessions from it
Comparison and shortlist Medium. Commercial triggers around 8.69% Publish real comparison tables with prices and named alternatives
Transactional and local intent Low. Transactional triggers around 1.76% Defend rankings, profiles and conversion paths as normal
Branded Low, and increasingly influenced by mentions Build third-party mentions of the brand name

Why fewer clicks can mean the same revenue

The visitor who arrives after reading an AI summary has already done the qualification step. Semrush reports the average AI search visitor is worth 4.4 times more than a traditional organic search visitor, and cites Seer Interactive data showing that being featured as an AI Overview source lifted click-through from 0.6% to 1.08% (Semrush AI SEO statistics). Adobe data in the same roundup found AI referral visits to retail sites had 27% lower bounce rates and sessions 38% longer.

None of that is a reason to be relaxed about a 47% relative drop in click rate. It is a reason to stop reporting sessions as the headline number. If your board deck leads with organic sessions, it will show a decline that your revenue does not. Rebuild the deck around qualified conversions per channel and cost per acquired customer, which is the same discipline that makes paid media and CRO legible.

The cost side nobody budgets for

AI systems fetch a great deal and send back very little. Cloudflare measured crawl-to-refer ratios across AI platforms in late June 2025 and found a range from roughly 70,900 crawls per referral at the top down to 0.1:1 at the bottom (Cloudflare crawl-to-refer data). Its later agent readiness work notes that fewer than half of all HTML page requests now come from a human (Cloudflare agent readiness report).

Practical consequences: your bandwidth and origin costs are partly serving machines, and your analytics baseline includes bot noise unless you filter it. Neither is fatal. Both should be known before you renegotiate hosting.

What to do in the next quarter

First, confirm you are retrievable. Google says appearing in AI features requires no additional technical work beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible, and no special AI markup (Google Search Central: AI features and your website). Check that snippet controls like nosnippet and max-snippet are not suppressing you by accident.

Second, restructure the pages that carry commercial weight so an answer can be lifted cleanly: the question as a heading, a 40 to 60 word direct answer underneath, then the detail.

Third, invest in mentions rather than only links. Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with AI Overview brand visibility across 75,000 brands, ahead of referring domains at 0.295 and backlinks at 0.218 (Ahrefs brand visibility study).

Fourth, instrument it. Build a GA4 channel matching session source against chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com (Semrush AI referral tracking guide). Expect small numbers and a concentrated mix: Semrush put ChatGPT at 85.79% of AI referral traffic in July 2025, with Gemini at 4.70% and Perplexity at 2.84%. Report that channel on conversion value, not sessions.

Who should actually worry

Publishers monetising informational pageviews with display advertising are in genuine trouble, because their product was the click. Affiliate sites built on thin comparison content are in the same position. Service businesses, local businesses and stores are not. Their money was never in the explainer article. If most of your organic revenue comes from branded and transactional queries, this is a reporting change and a content-format change, not an existential one. If it does not, your search strategy needed rebalancing before AI arrived.

The bottom line

AI search compresses informational click volume and leaves commercial intent largely intact, while the visitors who do arrive convert better. Change the scoreboard to qualified conversions, restructure your commercial pages for quotation, and build brand mentions.
