The short answer

Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting your business cited inside AI-generated answers rather than only ranked in a list of blue links. It matters now because a growing share of searches end without a click, and the citation, not the ranking, is what the buyer actually sees.

What changed, in numbers

AEO is not a rebrand of SEO invented by agencies looking for a new line item. It exists because the surface where buyers read your answer moved, and the measurement of who wins moved with it.

Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. On searches where Google showed an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time. Without a summary, they clicked 15% of the time. Only 1% of visits produced a click on a link inside the AI summary itself. AI Overviews appeared on 18% of all searches in that period, and 58% of users saw at least one.

Assistant usage is no longer a niche either. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users in February 2026, up from 800 million in October 2025. Similarweb measured roughly 9.5 billion average monthly visits across generative AI platforms between June 2025 and May 2026, growing 70% year over year. Over the same window, ChatGPT’s US citation rate rose from 1.6% to 6.8%, meaning the model now names outside sources far more often than it did a year earlier.

Gartner predicted back in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as generative AI became a substitute answer engine. Treat that as a directional forecast rather than a measured fact. The measured facts above are enough on their own.

How AEO actually differs from SEO

Same fundamentals, different unit of competition. SEO competes for a position on a results page. AEO competes to be one of three or four sources a model chooses to synthesise and name.

Classic SEO Answer engine optimization
Unit of competition One keyword, one page, one position A cluster of sub-queries generated from one question
What wins Relevance, links, page experience A clean extractable answer plus third-party corroboration
Primary metric Rank and organic sessions Citation share, brand mentions, assisted conversions
Failure mode Page 2 Named competitor, no mention of you
Typical time to effect Months Weeks for citations, months for durable share

The overlap is real, and Google says so directly. Its documentation states there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary” and “no special schema.org structured data that you need to add,” as long as the page is indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Anyone selling you proprietary AEO markup is selling you nothing.

What has changed is how loosely citations track rankings. Ahrefs found the share of AI Overview citations drawn from top-10 ranking pages fell from 76% in July 2025 to 38% by March 2026, with roughly 31% of citations coming from pages outside the top 100 entirely. A page that ranks eleventh can be cited. A page that ranks third can be skipped.

How to tell whether this applies to you

Two questions decide it.

Does your buyer research before they buy? If the purchase involves comparison, price ranges, vendor shortlists or “is X better than Y” questions, assistants are already in the journey whether you measure them or not.

Is your organic traffic falling while impressions hold steady? That pattern in Search Console is the signature of answers being read without clicks. It is not a penalty. It is the summary doing your job for you and keeping the credit.

If both are true, AEO is not optional. If neither is true, fix the fundamentals first. Traffic quality is worth noting here: Semrush’s analysis of more than 500 high-value marketing topics concluded AI search visitors were worth 4.4 times more than traditional organic visitors when measured by conversion rate, because they arrive already informed and already comparing.

What we’d do

TACK has run search programmes since 2009, across 300+ brands and 15+ industries. The AEO method we use is deliberately unglamorous.

  • One question per page, answered in the first 60 words. Models lift the block that resolves the question cleanly. Preamble gets skipped.
  • Structure for extraction. Descriptive H2s phrased as the questions people ask, short paragraphs, real tables with real numbers, and a source for every claim about the outside world.
  • Corroborate off-site. Consistent business data, reviews, directory presence and mentions on the platforms models pull from. A claim only your own domain makes is a weak claim.
  • Track citations, not just rank. Query the assistants on a fixed prompt set every month and record who gets named. Our SEO, AEO and GEO practice runs that as a standing report, not a one-off audit.
  • Keep the conversion path intact. Fewer, better-qualified visitors only pays if the page they land on converts, which is why we pair this with paid media and CRO rather than treating it as a separate discipline.

Common mistakes

Buying “AEO schema.” Google has published that no special structured data is required. Standard, correct schema is worth having for other reasons. Paying a premium for a proprietary flavour of it is waste.

Blocking the search crawlers. OpenAI’s documentation instructs site owners to allow OAI-SearchBot and its published IP ranges. Blanket AI bot blocks that fail to distinguish training crawlers from search crawlers delete you from the candidate pool for ChatGPT search results.

Judging AEO by session counts. If you measure only clicks, a successful AEO programme can look like a failure while your brand is being named to thousands of buyers. Measure citation share and branded search volume alongside sessions, or you will kill the thing that is working.

The bottom line

Answer engine optimization is the discipline of being the source a model chooses to name, and it matters now because clicks fell while question volume rose. The fundamentals of good SEO still apply, but the winning asset is a clean, verifiable answer that other sites confirm.
