The short answer

Shopify itself is $39 to $399 a month, or from $2,300 for Plus. The real cost is everything around it: 2.9% plus 30 cents per online card transaction on Basic, $0 to $400 for a theme, $50 to $300 a month in apps under $1M in revenue, and $5,000 to $25,000 to build the store.

What actually drives the number

1. The plan ($29–$2,300+ per month)

Shopify’s published pricing is straightforward, and annual billing cuts it meaningfully.

Plan Monthly Annual (per month) Online card rate Third-party gateway fee
Basic $39 $29 2.9% + 30¢ 2%
Grow $105 $79 2.7% + 30¢ 1%
Advanced $399 $299 2.5% + 30¢ 0.6%
Plus from $2,300 n/a Negotiated 0.2%

2. Payment processing (2.5%–3.5% of everything you sell)

This is the largest recurring cost for most stores and the one buyers forget to model. At $50,000 a month in sales on Basic, processing at 2.9% plus 30 cents runs roughly $1,500, which is far more than the $39 subscription. Premium cards carry higher rates: 3.5% plus 30 cents on Basic. And if you use an outside payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a fee of 2% on Basic, down to 0.2% on Plus. Upgrading plans is often a processing decision, not a features decision.

3. Theme and build ($0–$25,000)

The Shopify Theme Store lists 800+ free and paid themes, with paid themes generally between $280 and $400 as a one-time purchase. The build around it is the variable. One Little Web’s 2026 cost study puts ecommerce builds at $5,000 to $25,000 and up, with annual upkeep of $2,000 to $10,000.

4. Apps ($50–$15,000 per month)

App spend scales with revenue, and it scales fast. An Eightx analysis of Storeleads data covering 3.59 million tracked Shopify stores puts typical app spend at $50 to $300 a month under $1M in revenue with three to five apps, $1,000 to $3,500 between $1M and $5M with six to nine apps, and $5,000 to $15,000 between $5M and $20M. The same analysis notes only 1.82% of tracked stores spend over $100 a month on apps, so published averages are misleading for real operating brands.

How to tell which applies to you

Use this rule: pick the plan by processing volume, not by feature list.

The step from Basic to Grow costs $66 more a month and cuts your online card rate by 0.2 points. That pays for itself at roughly $33,000 in monthly card volume. Grow to Advanced costs $294 more and cuts another 0.2 points, breaking even near $147,000 a month. Run your own numbers before an agency talks you up a tier.

Second rule for the build: match the spend to your conversion rate, not to your taste. A 2026 analysis of 21 Shopify stores with $417M in combined revenue and 179M sessions found a median conversion rate of 2.07%, with mobile at 2.29% against desktop at 3.74%, and checkout abandonment at 51.6%. If your store converts at 1% on mobile, a $20,000 rebuild focused on mobile speed and checkout will return more than $20,000 of ads. If you are already at 3%, spend the money on traffic through paid media instead.

What we’d do

TACK™ is a Shopify Partner and has been building commerce since 2009 from Sherman Oaks. Engagements start at $5,000 a month. Our sequence for a store under $5M:

  • Start on a Theme Store theme, not a custom build. A $300 theme configured well outperforms a $30,000 custom front end that nobody can edit. Spend the saved budget on product content and traffic.
  • Audit the app stack before adding to it. Most stores carry two or three apps that duplicate each other and one that is quietly slowing the storefront. That is usually $200 a month back and a measurable speed gain.
  • Fix mobile checkout first. With checkout abandonment above 50% and mobile converting well below desktop, the checkout path is where the money is.
  • Make product pages quotable. Structured data, specifications, real answers to buyer questions, so both Google Shopping and AI assistants can surface your products. That work sits inside how we get you found.
  • One revenue view. Shopify, ads and organic reconciled, so you can see contribution margin rather than platform-reported ROAS. See our capabilities.

Common mistakes

Choosing a plan on features and ignoring processing. The crossover between Basic and Advanced sits near $90,000 in monthly card volume, because the $360 monthly subscription gap is worth 0.4 points of processing at that level. At $150,000 a month in sales you pay roughly $600 more in card fees to save $360 in subscription. That is a net loss of $240 every month for staying on the cheaper plan.

Using an outside payment gateway without doing the math. Shopify charges an additional fee when you do not use Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. On $50,000 a month, that 2% is $1,000, every month, on top of what your outside processor charges.

Solving conversion problems with apps. Ten apps at $30 each is $300 a month and a slower storefront, which usually costs more conversions than the apps recover. Fix speed, product content and checkout first, then add tools deliberately.

The bottom line

Budget $39 to $399 a month for the platform, 2.5% to 3.5% of revenue for processing, $50 to $300 a month in apps early on, and $5,000 to $25,000 for a build that can actually convert. Processing volume, not features, should pick your plan.
