The short answer
Expect $4,000 to $20,000 a month, with $8,000 to $12,000 typical for a small business buying one to two days a week. Hourly rates for senior operators run $200 to $350. Compare that to a full-time marketing leader: BLS puts median marketing manager pay at $161,030, before benefits.
What actually drives the number
1. Hours, not titles ($150–$500 per hour)
Go Fractional’s 2026 rate analysis puts hourly rates at $150 to $500 with an average of $325, and typical engagements between five and thirty-five hours a week. Growtal’s 2026 guide narrows the senior band to $200 to $350 an hour. The retainer is just those hours in a bundle. Ask how many hours you are buying and what happens when you exceed them.
2. The retainer band you land in ($2,000–$20,000/mo)
Go Fractional reports monthly retainers of $4,000 to $20,000, averaging around $12,000, with day rates of $1,200 to $2,500 for intensive short engagements. Growtal reports early-stage companies typically starting between $2,000 and $5,000 a month. The spread tracks scope: an advisor reviewing your plan monthly is not the same purchase as an operator running your team.
3. Whether they lead people or just think ($3,000+ difference)
There are three distinct products sold under the same title. Pricing them as one thing is where most buyers go wrong.
| Model | Typical cost | What you actually get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advisor | $2,000–$5,000/mo | Strategy review, monthly session, feedback on plans | You have a team, you need direction |
| Operator | $8,000–$15,000/mo | Owns the plan, manages agencies and staff, sits in your leadership meetings | No marketing leader, existing spend to govern |
| Operator plus execution team | $15,000–$25,000+/mo | Leadership plus the people who build and run campaigns | You need output, not just oversight |
| Day rate / sprint | $1,200–$2,500/day | Audit, positioning sprint, launch plan | A defined, finite problem |
4. Contract length (usually six months minimum)
Growtal notes most fractional CMO retainers run a minimum of six months, because positioning, hiring and channel rebuilds do not resolve in one quarter. A three-month engagement usually produces a strategy document nobody executes.
How to tell which applies to you
Use this rule: if your monthly marketing spend is bigger than the fractional CMO fee, you probably need one. If it is smaller, you need execution instead.
The job of a marketing leader is to make spend and staff productive. Paying $10,000 a month for someone to govern $4,000 of media is upside down. Paying $10,000 a month to govern $60,000 of media and three vendors is straightforward arithmetic. LocalIQ’s 2026 small business survey found 52% of small businesses run total monthly marketing budgets under $1,000. At that level, hire hands, not a head.
Second, run the full-time comparison honestly. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts median pay for marketing managers at $161,030 as of May 2024, with 434,000 people employed in the category. Salary is not the whole cost: BLS’s March 2026 employer cost data shows benefits account for 30.1% of total compensation for private industry workers. A $161,000 salary is closer to $210,000 loaded, plus recruiting, ramp and severance risk. Growtal notes full-time CMO base salaries often exceed $250,000 before bonus and equity.
So the honest comparison is roughly $17,500 a month fully loaded for a full-time hire you must keep busy, versus $8,000 to $12,000 a month for two days a week of someone more senior than you could otherwise afford.
What we’d do
TACK™ has operated as an outside marketing leadership function since 2009 from Sherman Oaks, across 300+ brands and 15+ industries. Engagements start at $5,000 a month. What we would insist on in the first ninety days:
- Week 1: the money map. Every dollar currently going out, every lead source coming in, and the actual cost per acquisition by channel. Most companies cannot produce this on request, which is itself the finding.
- Weeks 2–4: positioning and offer. Before touching media. Channel work built on weak positioning just buys more expensive proof that the offer is wrong.
- Weeks 4–8: the operating rhythm. One dashboard, one weekly meeting, one owner per number. Vendors report to the same scoreboard, or they leave.
- Weeks 8–12: build or buy. We recommend where to hire, where to keep an agency, and where a system replaces both. We are AI integrators, not trainers, so where a workflow should be automated we build it rather than sell you a course.
- Throughout: demand generation that compounds. Organic and answer engine visibility on one side, paid media and conversion work on the other. See our capabilities for the full stack.
Common mistakes
Buying strategy when you needed execution. A $6,000-a-month advisor produces a plan. If nobody on your side can build a landing page or run a campaign, that plan costs $18,000 a quarter and changes nothing. Check who executes before you sign.
Buying five hours a week and expecting leadership. Go Fractional’s data shows engagements between five and thirty-five hours a week. At five hours a week, roughly one hour a day, nobody can run vendors, sit in leadership meetings and own a number. You are buying an advisor at operator prices.
Skipping the exit terms. With six-month minimums common, the cost of a bad fit is $48,000 to $72,000. Negotiate a ninety-day checkpoint with defined deliverables, and get documentation ownership in writing so the strategy stays when the person goes.
The bottom line
Budget $8,000 to $12,000 a month for a genuine fractional operator, $2,000 to $5,000 for an advisor, and expect a six-month minimum either way. The comparison is not the fee against zero, it is the fee against a $200,000-plus loaded full-time hire.
