The short answer

B2B SaaS SEO earns on bottom-of-funnel pages: comparison, alternatives, integrations, pricing and use cases. Top-of-funnel definitional content is the exact category AI answers absorb, with over 88% of AI Overview triggers being informational. Build the pages a buying committee reads at shortlist stage and stop measuring the programme in sessions.

The efficiency number the CFO already has

The Benchmarkit 2025 B2B SaaS Performance Metrics report, based on 583 participants, put the median new customer acquisition cost ratio at $2.00 of sales and marketing spend per $1.00 of new annual recurring revenue, up 14% year over year, with the 75th percentile at $2.82. Sales and marketing spend as a share of revenue ran at a 37% median overall, 45% for venture-backed companies and 33% for private-equity-backed ones. Separately, Benchmarkit B2B marketing benchmarks puts median marketing spend at 9 to 10% of revenue, with demand generation taking 34 to 38% of the marketing budget at companies past $5M.

Compare that against the paid alternative. The LocaliQ search advertising benchmarks for the period ending 1 June 2026 put business services at $5.87 average cost per click, a 4.85% conversion rate and $93.69 average cost per lead. At a 5% lead-to-close rate, that arithmetic implies roughly $1,874 of media per customer before any sales cost. Organic pages that hold shortlist-stage rankings for two years compare well against that, which is the case worth making internally.

The pages that actually move pipeline

Page type Buyer stage Why it earns
[Competitor] alternatives Active shortlist High commercial intent, low volume, low competition from the competitor
[You] vs [Competitor] Final evaluation Owns the comparison narrative instead of ceding it to review sites
Integration pages, one per connector Technical qualification Matches the exact stack query a buyer types
Pricing, with real numbers Budget check Most-visited page on almost every SaaS site
Use case by role and by industry Internal justification Gives the champion language for the business case
Documentation and API reference Post-purchase and evaluation Ranks durably and reduces support load

Gartner’s research reports that 75% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free experience, while buyers are 1.8 times more likely to complete a high-quality deal when they use supplier-provided digital tools alongside a sales representative rather than entirely alone (Gartner B2B buying journey research). Your website is doing the rep-free part of that journey whether you resourced it or not. Comparison and pricing pages are the assets that let a buyer self-qualify without a call, then arrive better informed when they book one.

Why the old content playbook stopped compounding

The standard B2B SaaS content programme was built on definitional keywords: what is X, X best practices, X templates. Semrush reports that over 88% of searches triggering AI Overviews are informational, with commercial queries at 8.69% and transactional at 1.76%, and that more than 68% of terms triggering AI Overviews get 100 or fewer monthly searches (Semrush AI SEO statistics).

That is precisely the query class those programmes targeted. The volume is being answered upstream. Meanwhile the same data shows AI-sourced visitors are worth 4.4 times a traditional organic visitor, so the shift is toward fewer, better-qualified arrivals. Judge your content programme on pipeline influenced rather than on sessions, and accept that the traffic line will look worse while the pipeline line does not.

Brand mentions beat link buying

Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with AI Overview brand visibility, ahead of branded search volume at 0.392, referring domains at 0.295 and backlinks at 0.218 (Ahrefs brand visibility study). Correlation is not causation and the sample skews established, but the ordering matches how buying committees behave.

For a SaaS company that argues for review site profiles kept current, analyst and podcast appearances, customer case studies published by the customer, integration listings in partner marketplaces, and named quotes in trade press. Those produce mentions. A purchased link on an unrelated blog produces nothing a buyer or a model can use.

What to stop paying for

Cut keyword-volume-chasing content briefs where the target term has no commercial intent. Cut gated ebooks whose only job is to inflate a lead count. Cut domain authority link packages. Cut the monthly report whose headline is total organic sessions. Cut duplicate glossary pages that exist because a tool suggested them.

Redirect that budget to integration pages, competitor comparisons, documentation SEO, and the customer proof that Google’s guidance treats as originality and expertise rather than repackaging (Google helpful content guidance). Byline pages to named people with real roles, because anonymous vendor content on a purchase decision is weak on exactly the signal Google says it weighs.

Measure it like a revenue channel

Benchmarkit found only 52% of marketing teams measure marketing cost per dollar of pipeline and just 46% track marketing cost per dollar of new logo annual recurring revenue (Benchmarkit B2B marketing benchmarks). If you are in the other half, that is the first fix, because you cannot defend an organic budget without it.

Import closed-won data back into your analytics, tag first-touch and last-touch by page, and report cost per opportunity by content cluster. That is the same discipline that makes paid and CRO work accountable, and it is where our search programmes start rather than end.

The bottom line

Build the pages a shortlisting buyer reads, keep documentation crawlable, invest in mentions rather than links, and report on pipeline instead of sessions. Definitional content is now a brand exercise, not a traffic strategy.
