The short answer

Decide first whether you need to rank for people standing in Santa Monica or for buyers nationwide. Local search here serves 3.9 million visitors a year, 87.7% of them day trippers. National search puts you against in-house teams at companies like GoodRx and ZipRecruiter. The tactics barely overlap.

What actually drives the number

Four things determine what SEO costs in Santa Monica and how fast it can work.

Your searcher is probably not a resident. The city has 90,082 residents, but recorded 3,893,700 visitors in 2025 who spent $996.6 million. Day visitors made up 3,415,782 of that total, or 87.7%; overnight guests were 478,059. Total visits fell 7.8% against 2024 while spending rose 9%, and visitor retail sales tax grew 36% (Santa Monica Travel & Tourism, U.S. Census QuickFacts). Retail sales in 2022 hit $54,475 per capita, roughly double what a resident base alone can spend. Your local SEO is largely serving people who arrived this morning, do not know the streets, and are deciding on a phone.

If you sell nationally, you are competing with in-house SEO teams. Snap, Hulu, GoodRx, Headspace, ZipRecruiter, Cornerstone OnDemand, FIGS and GumGum are all in or around the city (Built In Los Angeles). Several of them run organic search as a primary acquisition channel with dedicated staff. An agency retainer that would be a full programme elsewhere is a supplement here. Buy the specific capability your team lacks, whether that is technical remediation, programmatic page architecture or answer-engine visibility.

Google has said what it rewards, and it applies to both cases. Google’s guidance asks publishers to make the who, how and why of content obvious: clear bylines linking to author backgrounds, transparency about how the work was produced, and content built for a real audience rather than for rankings. It states that trust is the most important of the E-E-A-T factors, and that health, finance and safety topics carry extra weight (Google Search Central). For a DTC health or finance brand headquartered here, that is not advice. It is the ranking constraint.

Discovery is fragmenting away from blue links. In the 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, 68% require at least four stars, consumers consult an average of six review platforms, and 45% now use ChatGPT or similar tools for local recommendations, ranking third behind Google and Facebook. Eighty per cent say they are more likely to use a business that replies to all reviews, and half react badly to templated replies (BrightLocal). An SEO contract that reports only keyword positions is reporting on a shrinking slice.

How to tell which applies to you

Look at where last month’s revenue came from. If most of it came from someone physically present in the city, you have a local SEO problem. If most came from a card billed in another state, you have a national one.

Question Local SEO in Santa Monica National SEO from Santa Monica
Who is searching Day visitors on mobile, unfamiliar with the area Category buyers anywhere in the US
Core assets Business Profile, reviews, hours, photos, local schema Site architecture, topical depth, credible authors
Main competitor The business two doors down with more reviews A well-funded in-house SEO team
Sensible horizon Six to twelve weeks Two to four quarters
Right metric Calls, direction requests, bookings Non-brand organic revenue

There is a third case worth naming. If your foot traffic depends on a block rather than a city, check the block. Retail vacancy in Santa Monica reached 16%, the highest in decades, office vacancy sits near 35%, and the city approved a $60 million reinvestment plan plus a $3 million economic development fund in March 2026 (Los Angeles Business Journal). SEO can move your share of a shrinking street. It cannot repopulate the street.

What we’d do

TACK™ works from Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks with production studios in Northridge. We do not have a Santa Monica office and will not claim one. We are about thirty minutes over the hill. Since 2009 we have run more than 2,500 campaigns for 300-plus brands across 15-plus industries, we are a Google, Meta, Shopify and TikTok Partner, and client satisfaction sits at 97%. Engagements start at $5,000 a month.

For a local business we start with the visitor, not the resident. That means Business Profile categories and attributes set for someone who has never been here, photos that show the entrance and the block, review velocity and genuine replies rather than templates, and pages built around the questions a day visitor actually types. For a national seller we start with an entity and architecture audit, then build topical depth with named authors and full structured data, and we measure answer-engine citations alongside rankings because a growing share of demand now resolves inside an AI answer. Both sit inside Get Found. Where organic will take quarters and you need revenue sooner, we run paid in parallel and reduce it as organic compounds, which is Get Leads. The whole service list is on our capabilities page.

Common mistakes

Writing local pages for residents in a city where visitors do most of the spending. Retail sales run $54,475 per capita against a 90,082 population. Cost: content that never matches the query a visitor types on the day they are ready to buy.

Hiring a generalist agency to out-rank an in-house team. The companies you compete with employ people who do this full time. Cost: a year of retainer for movement on terms that were never winnable at that level of investment.

Reporting positions instead of revenue and calls. With 45% of consumers now asking AI tools for local recommendations, your rank report can improve while enquiries fall. Cost: a quarter of green dashboards while the phone goes quiet.

The bottom line

Santa Monica SEO splits cleanly: a visitor-facing local problem measured in calls and bookings, or a national problem measured in non-brand organic revenue against well-resourced in-house teams. Choose one, staff it properly, and measure it honestly.
