The short answer
Shortlist three to five Los Angeles SEO agencies that can name the ZIP codes they would target, explain how Google’s distance factor limits a single address, and show what month seven looks like. Then check their own search visibility in their own category before you check their case studies.
What actually drives the number
Four things set the price and the timeline for SEO in Los Angeles, and only one of them is the agency.
Category density. Los Angeles County contains 304,988 employer establishments employing nearly 4 million people, according to U.S. Census QuickFacts. Almost every service category here has hundreds of direct competitors inside a 20-mile radius. A dentist in a small metro can rank in four months. In Los Angeles, the same work takes nine to eighteen because the field is that deep.
Geography, not just keywords. Google states plainly that local results are ranked on relevance, distance and prominence, and that distance means “how far each business is from the customer who’s searching” (Google Business Profile Help). The city of Los Angeles alone holds 3,869,089 residents spread across roughly 469 square miles (U.S. Census QuickFacts). One office cannot appear in the map pack in Westwood, Downtown and Northridge at the same time. Any agency that promises that is selling you a fiction.
What it costs to run an agency inside city limits. Los Angeles charges a business tax of $4.25 per $1,000 of gross receipts on the Professions and Occupations classification (L.A. Office of Finance), with a small business exemption that stops at $100,000 in gross receipts (LAMC Sec. 21.29). The city minimum wage reached $18.42 an hour on July 1, 2026 (Office of Wage Standards), and the metro’s average hourly wage of $37.15 runs well above the $33.54 national figure (BLS, May 2025). A local agency’s floor price reflects payroll it cannot escape. A $900-a-month quote from a Los Angeles address means the work is happening somewhere else.
Whether you need answer visibility as well as rankings. Pew Research found that about 18% of Google searches in March 2025 returned an AI summary, and that users clicked a traditional result in 8% of those visits versus 15% when no summary appeared (Pew Research Center). Ranking third is worth less than it was. Being the source an assistant quotes is worth more. That is a different workload, and it belongs in the scope.
How to tell which applies to you
Use this rule. Count how many physical addresses you serve customers from. If the answer is one, you are buying neighbourhood SEO plus category content, and your realistic map-pack radius is three to six miles, not the county. If the answer is two to nine, you are buying multi-location work with a distinct page, profile and review stream per site. If you have no storefront and travel to clients, you are a service-area business, and Google says the boundary “shouldn’t extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time” (Google Business Profile guidelines).
Then check the value of a customer. Our rule of thumb: if one new client is worth under $500 in gross margin, Los Angeles organic search is a long game and you should pair it with paid. If a client is worth $5,000 or more, the arithmetic works out inside a year even with LA-level competition.
| Cost input | Los Angeles (city) | Burbank | Glendale |
|---|---|---|---|
| City tax on service revenue | $4.25 per $1,000 gross receipts | No gross receipts tax | No gross receipts or business licence tax |
| City minimum wage | $18.42/hr from 1 July 2026 | State rate applies | State rate applies |
| Population | 3,869,089 | 102,988 | 187,160 |

What we’d do
TACK™ has worked from Sherman Oaks since 2009, on Ventura Boulevard, with production studios in Northridge. We have run more than 2,500 campaigns for 300-plus brands across 15-plus industries, and we are a Google Partner. Our engagements start at $5,000 a month.
On a Los Angeles SEO engagement we start by mapping demand geographically rather than by keyword volume alone: which parts of the county actually contain your buyers, and which of those you can realistically win from your address. We then build the category pages that answer purchase questions in full, because those are the pages assistants quote. We treat reviews as a ranking input, not a vanity metric, since Google names prominence as a factor and 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, with 74% weighting the last three months most heavily (BrightLocal, 2026). That work sits inside our Get Found practice, and where organic cannot cover the gap fast enough we run paid media and CRO alongside it. The full service list is on our capabilities page.
Common mistakes
Buying citywide rankings. Agencies sell “rank in Los Angeles” because it sounds bigger than “rank in Sherman Oaks and Encino.” Distance is a stated Google ranking factor. You pay twelve months for a target that was never reachable from one address. Cost: an entire budget year.
Hiring on a traffic promise instead of a revenue model. Sessions in a county of 9.69 million people are easy to manufacture and worthless if they are not buyers. Ask for the assumed close rate and average order value before you sign. Cost: usually 6 to 9 months before anyone notices.
Ignoring the answer layer. If your pages are not structured to be quoted, you lose the 18% of searches that resolve inside an AI summary and never reach a click. Cost: compounding, because the share of those searches keeps rising.
The bottom line
Los Angeles SEO is won at neighbourhood scale, in a category with real depth, by an agency that can show its own arithmetic. Judge candidates on geography, revenue modelling and answer visibility, and ignore anyone quoting citywide domination.
