The short answer

San Diego is a separate metro with its own economy, not a suburb of Los Angeles. Life sciences directly employ 61,866 people, defence spending accounts for 22.2% of gross regional product, and tourism supports one in eight jobs. Choose an agency that knows which of those three worlds your buyer lives in.

Three economies in one city

Most cities have one dominant industry. San Diego has three that each stand on their own, and they barely overlap.

Life sciences. San Diego directly employed 61,866 life science workers in 2025, generated $55.2 billion in economic output, supported 155,621 total jobs, attracted $3.9 billion in investment and secured more than $1.1 billion in NIH and NSF funding (Biocom California Economic Impact Report). This is a research-first buyer: long evaluation, technical scrutiny, regulatory constraints on what you can claim.

Defence. Direct defence spending in San Diego reached $39.3 billion, representing 22.2% of gross regional product and supporting nearly 357,000 local jobs, including roughly 143,000 active-duty, reserve and civilian military personnel plus about 214,000 jobs sustained through contracting and local business activity. That includes $19.8 billion in contracts awarded to more than 2,000 regional companies. Total spending declined roughly 3% year over year on federal budget constraints (UC San Diego Rady School and San Diego Military Advisory Council 2025 Military Economic Impact Report). Marketing into defence contracting is a compliance and credential exercise, not a demand-generation one.

Tourism. San Diego welcomed 32.5 million visitors in 2024, comprising 18.0 million overnight and 14.5 million day visitors, with $14.8 billion in direct visitor spending and $22 billion in total economic impact. Tourism supports one in eight jobs in San Diego, across 68,400 hotel rooms countywide at 74.2% average occupancy and a $212 average daily rate (San Diego Tourism Authority Fast Facts). This buyer decides fast, books on mobile, and is heavily influenced by reviews and photography.

The residential market underneath is 1,406,106 people with a median household income of $108,077, per capita income of $57,083, and 51.0% of adults holding a bachelor’s degree or higher (U.S. Census QuickFacts).

San Diego’s business tax is trivially small, and that is the point

The City of San Diego charges a Business Tax Certificate of $34.00 annually for a business with twelve employees or fewer, and $125.00 plus $5.00 per employee for a business with thirteen or more, plus a $4.00 state accessibility fee and, from 1 July 2025, a Minimum Wage Enforcement Fee of $1.47 per employee annually (City of San Diego Treasurer). Compare that with the Los Angeles Business Tax at $4.25 per $1,000 of gross receipts on professions and occupations (L.A. Office of Finance). A $5 million professional services firm pays roughly $21,000 a year in Los Angeles city business tax and a small fraction of that in San Diego.

This is one reason San Diego founders resist the assumption that Los Angeles vendors and Los Angeles cost structures apply here. They do not, and an agency that arrives with Los Angeles benchmarks and Los Angeles pricing assumptions without saying so will look out of touch quickly.

San Diego fact Figure What it changes
Life science direct employment 61,866 Technical, regulated, evidence-led buyers
Defence share of regional GDP 22.2% Credential and compliance-driven procurement
Annual visitors 32.5 million Fast-decision, review-driven consumer market
City population 1,406,106 Genuinely separate metro, not an LA suburb
City business tax certificate $34 for 12 or fewer employees Far lower fixed city cost than Los Angeles

What local search competition looks like here

San Diego is large, geographically fragmented, and neighbourhood-loyal. La Jolla, North Park, Carlsbad, Chula Vista and downtown behave as distinct markets with distinct competitor sets. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help), and across a metro this spread out, one Business Profile cannot serve the whole county. Businesses that win here build neighbourhood-level content and, where they have genuine locations, genuine separate listings.

The agency market itself is deep. San Diego has a large, established local agency community, which means local providers are easy to find and competition on price is real. The differentiator is rarely proximity. It is whether the agency can operate in your specific vertical, whether that is a clinical-stage biotech with claims restrictions, a defence supplier with security constraints, or a hospitality operator competing on photography and reviews. The newer question is whether an AI assistant names you when a buyer asks for a recommendation in your category, which is the work in Get Found.

What we would do, and where we actually are

Plainly: TACK™ has no San Diego office. We are headquartered on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, with production studios in Northridge. San Diego is a separate metro two hours south and we serve clients there remotely, travelling down when the work requires it. If proximity is a hard requirement for you, San Diego has good local agencies and you should hire one. If capability in your vertical matters more, distance is a solvable problem.

Since 2009 we have run more than 2,500 campaigns for 300-plus brands across 15-plus industries. We are a Google, Meta, Shopify and TikTok Partner, client satisfaction sits at 97%, and engagements start at $5,000 a month.

For a San Diego business we start by naming which economy you sell into. Life sciences and defence mean published evidence, credential visibility and content that survives technical and legal review. Tourism and hospitality mean photography, reviews, booking-path conversion and demand capture timed to the travel planning window, which is Get Leads. Consumer and local services mean neighbourhood-level presence rather than a county-wide page. We are AI integrators rather than trainers, so where intake, booking or reporting is eating hours, we build the automation into your operation. Recent work is on our case studies page.

Three mistakes that cost San Diego businesses money

Treating San Diego as part of Los Angeles. Different metro, different media market, different cost base, different competitive set. Campaigns copied north to south underperform consistently.

One profile for the whole county. La Jolla and Chula Vista are forty minutes and a world apart. Distance is a ranking factor and it does not forgive a single pin.

Assuming defence spending only goes up. Total military spending fell roughly 3% year over year on federal budget constraints. A contractor whose pipeline assumes growth should be diversifying, not amplifying.

The bottom line

San Diego is a separate metro running on life sciences, defence and tourism, with a business tax a fraction of Los Angeles rates and a deep local agency market. The right agency will name which of those three economies your buyer belongs to before it proposes anything.

We work with San Diego clients from Los Angeles and we will tell you honestly whether that is the right fit. Book at calendly.com/tack-media-agency/talk-to-an-expert or call 310-620-1141. One call. Twenty minutes. Pricing on the call.
