The short answer

Shortlist on three things: verifiable platform partnerships, a written 90-day plan with numbers in it, and full client ownership of every ad account. Los Angeles County holds about 305,000 employer establishments, so the constraint is filtering, not finding. Interview three agencies and ask each what baseline they would set in week one.

What is actually different about Los Angeles

Four things about this market change how you should choose, and none of them appears in a generic agency-selection checklist.

Supply density makes verification the hard part

The US Census Bureau counts 304,988 employer establishments in Los Angeles County as of 2023, serving a population of 9,694,934 as of July 2025. Census data compiled for the county records 2,236 establishments in advertising, public relations and related services, plus 38,526 in professional, scientific and technical services. You will not struggle to find candidates. You will struggle to tell them apart.

Use signals that can be checked from outside. Platform partner status with Google, Meta, Shopify or TikTok is verifiable and revocable, which makes it worth more than a self-declared specialism.

Geography breaks local search in a way it does not elsewhere

Google states plainly that local results are ranked on relevance, distance and prominence, and that “there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” Distance is the part that catches LA businesses out. A strong profile in Sherman Oaks does not carry to Long Beach, and a single location cannot cover a county that runs from Lancaster to San Pedro.

Any agency pitching you local SEO in LA should be able to explain, without prompting, how they handle service-area coverage across multiple sub-markets. If they treat “Los Angeles” as one geography, they have not worked here.

Half the county does not speak English at home

Census figures put 55.1% of Los Angeles County residents aged five and over speaking a language other than English at home across 2020 to 2024. That is a paid media targeting decision, a creative decision and a landing page decision. An agency that has never run non-English creative in this market will quietly leave a large share of your addressable demand untouched.

The local economy is sector-concentrated and periodically disrupted

The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation’s 2026 Economic Forecast, published in February 2026, describes continued but moderated employment growth, with strength in trade and logistics and continuing housing affordability pressure, following a 2025 that included environmental disasters, trade volatility and supply chain disruption. Entertainment, advanced manufacturing and trade and logistics remain the anchor sectors.

The practical consequence is that budget flexibility matters more here than in steadier metros. Ask how an agency has reallocated spend for clients during a disrupted quarter. The answer tells you whether they manage or merely report.

How to filter the shortlist

Ask this A good answer sounds like Walk away if
Which platform partnerships do you hold? Named, current, verifiable on the platform’s own directory “We are basically a partner”
What baseline would you document in week one? Cost per lead, conversion rate, close rate, deal value, impressions Strategy talk with no numbers
Who owns the ad accounts and the domain? You do, on your own billing, from day one Agency-owned accounts “for efficiency”
How do you cover multiple LA sub-markets? Specific service-area and location strategy “We target Los Angeles”
Who does the work after we sign? Named people, introduced in the pitch Senior pitch team, unnamed delivery team
What benchmark are we measured against? Category-specific, sourced, written down “We beat industry average”

Hold the numbers to a public reference. The 2026 all-industry search benchmarks put the median at a $5.42 cost per click, 8.18% conversion rate and $66.69 cost per lead, drawn from 13,474 US campaigns. Those are medians across 23 industries, so use your own category rather than the headline. An agency that cannot tell you where your category sits against a published benchmark is guessing.

What we’d do

TACK is based in Sherman Oaks with studios in Northridge, and has been working with Los Angeles businesses since 2009. Across 300+ brands, 15+ industries, 2,500+ campaigns and 50+ systems built, the pattern we use locally is consistent.

  • Map the sub-markets before the media plan. Which neighbourhoods, which drive times, which languages. In a county of 9.7 million people, spend allocated by geography beats spend allocated by keyword.
  • Verify the fundamentals before adding budget. Tracking, Google Business Profile accuracy, review volume, mobile conversion. These are cheap and they gate everything else.
  • Build for answer engines as well as search. Increasingly the first shortlist a buyer sees is generated, not ranked, which is why our SEO, AEO and GEO work targets citations alongside positions.
  • Report against a documented baseline. Same six numbers every month, compared to week one. Our capabilities are structured around that, and our case studies show the shape of the work.

TACK is a Google, Meta, Shopify and TikTok Partner, with 97% client satisfaction. Engagements start at $5,000 per month.

Common mistakes

Choosing on proximity alone. An office twenty minutes away is convenient. It is not a qualification. Ask about relevant category experience and verifiable platform credentials before you ask about the address.

Letting the agency own your accounts. If the ad account, the analytics property or the domain sits under an agency login, switching costs become a hostage situation and your historical data leaves with them. Own everything, grant access.

Buying the pitch team. The strongest presenters in this market are frequently not the people who will run your account. Ask who does the work, get names, and put them in the engagement document.

The bottom line

Los Angeles has no shortage of agencies, so the skill is filtering. Verify platform partnerships, demand a written baseline in week one, keep ownership of every account, and check that the agency treats LA as many markets rather than one.
