The short answer

Long Beach is a port city of 450,469 people with a median household income of $87,430, and its economy runs on logistics, healthcare and visitors rather than on office professionals. The Port handled a record 9.9 million containers in 2025. Choose an agency that can market to working households and to freight-adjacent B2B buyers.

The port sets the tone for everything else

You cannot understand business in Long Beach without understanding the port. The Port of Long Beach moved a record 9.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2025, only the third time it has crossed nine million, and expects roughly nine million again in 2026 (Transport Topics). The port handles 15% of all U.S. container cargo, and trade moving through it supports 2,714,707 jobs nationally, 1,138,156 in California, 691,607 across the five-county Southern California region and 543,122 in the Los Angeles metropolitan area (Port of Long Beach economic impact study, via Pacific Ports).

The practical effect for a local business is that a large share of Long Beach’s B2B market is logistics-adjacent: freight forwarders, customs brokers, drayage operators, warehousing, equipment maintenance, insurance and the professional services that support them. These buyers are cyclical, tariff-sensitive and unusually well informed about cost. Marketing that leans on brand feeling rather than measurable operational benefit does badly with them.

Visitors and healthcare fill in the rest

Long Beach’s visitor economy generates $1.97 billion in economic impact, supports 14,600 jobs, produces $785 million in labour income at an average salary of $53,850, and yields $359 million in overall tax revenue including $38.2 million in transient occupancy tax (Visit Long Beach, analysis by CSU Long Beach economists). Conventions, the aquarium, the waterfront and the Grand Prix all pull spending in on a calendar that a marketer can plan against months ahead.

The residential market is the third piece and it looks nothing like the Westside. Long Beach has 450,469 residents, a median household income of $87,430, per capita income of $44,575, and 35.6% of adults holding a bachelor’s degree or higher (U.S. Census QuickFacts). This is a large, diverse, working-household market. Price and value messaging works here in a way it does not in Calabasas or Culver City, and Spanish-language and multilingual creative is not an add-on, it is table stakes.

Long Beach taxes businesses by headcount, not revenue

This is one of the clearest differences between Long Beach and the Los Angeles cities up the coast. Long Beach’s business licence rates are structured as a base tax plus a per-employee amount. Professionals pay a base of $442.95 plus $34.46 per employee. Services pay the same $442.95 base plus $23.00 per employee. A $4 state-mandated ADA fee applies to applications (City of Long Beach Business License Rates, effective 1 July 2023). Los Angeles, by contrast, taxes gross receipts at $4.25 per $1,000 for professions and occupations (L.A. Office of Finance).

The consequence is that Long Beach penalises headcount and Los Angeles penalises revenue. A high-revenue, low-headcount firm is structurally cheaper to run in Long Beach. A labour-heavy business gets the opposite result. Rates change, so check the current schedule before you plan.

Long Beach fact Figure What it changes
Port throughput, 2025 9.9 million TEU, a record Large logistics-adjacent B2B market
Share of U.S. container cargo 15% National relevance for freight vendors
Visitor economic impact $1.97 billion, 14,600 jobs Event-driven demand you can plan for
Population 450,469 Large, diverse consumer market
Business licence structure $442.95 base plus per-employee fee Headcount, not revenue, drives city cost

What local search competition looks like here

Long Beach is geographically large and neighbourhood-driven. Belmont Shore, Bixby Knolls, downtown, the East Side and North Long Beach all behave like separate markets, and a single Business Profile pin will not serve all of them. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help), and across a city this size the distance factor is decisive. Businesses that win here do it with genuine neighbourhood-level content, not with a single “Long Beach” service page.

Competition is also less saturated than in the Westside or the Valley. Fewer national agencies chase Long Beach terms, which means a well-executed local programme still moves quickly. The newer battleground is whether an AI assistant names you when someone asks for a recommendation in your category, which is the work in Get Found.

What we would do, and where we actually are

Straight answer: TACK™ has no Long Beach office. We are headquartered on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks with production studios in Northridge, and we serve Long Beach clients remotely, travelling in when the work requires it. If an agency claims a Long Beach presence, ask for the street address and who sits there.

Since 2009 we have run more than 2,500 campaigns for 300-plus brands across 15-plus industries. We are a Google, Meta, Shopify and TikTok Partner, client satisfaction sits at 97%, and engagements start at $5,000 a month.

For a Long Beach business we start by deciding whether you are selling to households, to visitors or to the freight economy. Households means neighbourhood-level local search, reviews and paid media bounded by area rather than by the city name, which is Get Leads. Visitors means building around the event calendar and capturing intent while people are planning, not while they are here. Freight-adjacent B2B means content that proves operational benefit in numbers, plus visibility in the places procurement teams shortlist. We are AI integrators rather than trainers, so where quoting, dispatch or reporting is eating hours, we build the automation in. Recent work is on our case studies page.

Three mistakes that cost Long Beach businesses money

Treating the city as one market. Belmont Shore and North Long Beach do not share a customer. One “Long Beach” landing page will underperform five neighbourhood pages every time.

Importing Westside pricing and tone. With a median household income of $87,430 and 35.6% degree attainment, messaging built for a $150,000 household misses most of the city.

Ignoring the calendar. A visitor economy worth $1.97 billion runs on scheduled events. Businesses that plan media around the convention and event calendar consistently outperform those that spend evenly across the year.

The bottom line

Long Beach is a record-setting port, a $1.97 billion visitor economy and a large working-household market, taxed by headcount rather than revenue. The right agency will tell you which of those three is your customer before it proposes a budget.
