The short answer
Culver City is a small city with an outsized corporate tenant base: Sony Pictures Studios, Amazon MGM Studios, HBO, TikTok and an Apple campus of more than 550,000 square feet. It also runs its own gross receipts tax, from $1.30 to $3.50 per $1,000, with the first $200,000 exempt. Pick an agency that understands enterprise-adjacent buyers.
Thirty-nine thousand residents, a studio lot and a tech campus
Culver City is 39,452 residents with a median household income of $117,389, per capita income of $79,000, and 62.4% of adults holding a bachelor’s degree or higher (U.S. Census QuickFacts). That is a small, affluent, highly educated town. What sits on top of it is nothing like a small town.
Sony Pictures Studios has anchored the city for decades. Amazon MGM Studios, TikTok, Technicolor and Beats Electronics all hold Culver City operations, HBO anchors the office space at Ivy Station, and Apple is building more than 550,000 square feet across two mid-rise buildings expected to house up to 2,400 employees on parcels bordered by Venice, National and Washington boulevards (Los Angeles Times via Yahoo Finance). A city of under 40,000 people is absorbing a corporate daytime population that dwarfs its residential one.
That creates two entirely separate marketing problems in the same square mile. Local consumer businesses are selling to a weekday population that is much larger and much better paid than the census figure implies. Service businesses are selling to procurement departments at some of the largest companies in the world, where the buying process runs on security reviews, vendor onboarding and quarterly budget cycles.
Culver City taxes gross receipts, and Los Angeles does it differently
This matters more than most business owners realise, because Culver City is entirely surrounded by the City of Los Angeles. Culver City’s municipal code sets seven gross receipts rate bands, from $1.30 per $1,000 at GRT-A up to $3.50 per $1,000 at GRT-G, exempts the first $200,000 in annual gross receipts, and adds a further 0.01% assessment where annual gross receipts exceed $100,000,000 (Culver City Municipal Code § 11.01.245).
Cross the city line and the rules change. Los Angeles charges $4.25 per $1,000 of gross receipts on professions and occupations and $1.27 per $1,000 on retail, with a small business exemption only under $100,000 in worldwide gross receipts (L.A. Office of Finance, Tax Incentives and Exemptions). For a small services firm, Culver City’s $200,000 exemption is the more generous starting point. For a mid-sized professional firm, the comparison depends entirely on which rate band you land in. Get your classification confirmed before you model next year.
| Culver City fact | Figure | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Population | 39,452 | Small residential base, large daytime one |
| Median household income | $117,389 | Premium local consumer positioning works |
| Apple campus under construction | 550,000+ sq ft, up to 2,400 staff | More weekday demand, more B2B opportunity |
| City gross receipts tax | $1.30 to $3.50 per $1,000 | Rate band decides your fixed cost |
| Gross receipts exemption | First $200,000 | Small firms start tax-free here |
What local search competition looks like here
Culver City’s search radius overlaps Mar Vista, Palms, Del Rey and Westchester, and because the city is physically small, a Google searcher standing at Ivy Station is within a mile of businesses in three different jurisdictions. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). The practical consequence is that “Culver City” as a keyword is fought over by businesses that are not in Culver City, and winning it takes genuine prominence rather than a lucky pin.
For the B2B side, local search barely registers. Enterprise buyers at studios and tech companies build shortlists through referrals, internal vendor lists, and increasingly through AI assistants that summarise a category before anyone opens a search page. Being the named answer is its own discipline, covered in Get Found.
What we would do, and where we actually are
Be clear on this: TACK™ has no Culver City office. We are headquartered on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks with production studios in Northridge, on the other side of the hill. We serve Culver City clients remotely and travel in when the work needs it. Any agency that tells you it has a Culver City presence when it does not is starting the relationship with a small lie, and you should ask for the address.
Since 2009 we have run more than 2,500 campaigns for 300-plus brands across 15-plus industries. We are a Google, Meta, Shopify and TikTok Partner, client satisfaction sits at 97%, and engagements start at $5,000 a month.
For a Culver City business we start by separating the weekday corporate population from the resident one. For consumer demand, that means Business Profile, review velocity and geographically bounded paid media around the studio and tech campuses, which is Get Leads. For firms selling into Sony, Amazon, Apple or the agencies that orbit them, it means content that survives a procurement and security review, plus visibility where those buyers form shortlists. We are AI integrators rather than trainers, so where intake, quoting or reporting is consuming staff hours, we build automation into the operation. The full range is on our capabilities page.
Three mistakes that cost Culver City businesses money
Sizing the market to 39,452 residents. The daytime population is the market. Campaign scheduling, offers and store hours should follow the working week, not the weekend.
Selling to enterprise on a local-business timeline. A vendor pitching Apple or Amazon on a four-week close will be disappointed. Budget for a cycle measured in quarters and build the assets that survive review.
Guessing your gross receipts classification. With seven rate bands from $1.30 to $3.50 per $1,000, the difference between bands on a mid-sized firm is not trivial. Confirm it in writing.
The bottom line
Culver City packs studio lots, an Apple campus, HBO and TikTok into a city of under 40,000 people, and runs its own gross receipts tax with its own rate bands. The right agency will tell you whether your buyer is the weekday worker or the enterprise procurement team before it quotes you anything.
