The short answer

The short answer Get mentioned where ChatGPT reads. In US responses Wikipedia carries 13.15 percent of citations and Reddit 11.97 percent, with LinkedIn cited in 14.3 percent of ChatGPT Search responses. Then publish pages with statistics and quoted sources, which lifted visibility in generated answers 25 to 27 percent in benchmark testing. Where ChatGPT actually gets its answers.

The short answer

Get mentioned where ChatGPT reads.

Where ChatGPT actually gets its answers

ChatGPT does not have a ranking algorithm you can optimize against. It retrieves from a narrow set of sources and generates from a much wider training corpus. Both are addressable, but not with SEO tactics.

A Q1 2026 citation audit by 5W, synthesizing nine datasets including Similarweb’s roughly 600,000-citation set and Semrush’s 13-week tracking study, put US ChatGPT citation share at Wikipedia 13.15 percent, Reddit 11.97 percent, Reuters 2.27 percent and Forbes 1.38 percent. The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bloomberg and the Financial Times did not appear in the top 20. LinkedIn moved from eleventh to fifth in three months and is now cited in 14.3 percent of ChatGPT Search responses.

Those shares move fast. Semrush tracked 230,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity over 13 weeks, covering more than 100 million citations, and watched Reddit’s share of ChatGPT responses collapse from roughly 60 percent to around 10 percent while Wikipedia fell from about 55 percent to under 20 percent, with Medium, Forbes and LinkedIn gaining. Google AI Mode and Perplexity stayed far more stable over the same period.

The practical read: do not build a strategy on one platform’s current favorite source. Build presence across the handful that consistently appear.

The four things that actually work

1. Be described accurately on the high-citation platforms. A complete, current LinkedIn company page. Genuine participation in the subreddits where your category is discussed, under a real identity. A Wikipedia entry only if you genuinely meet notability standards, which most businesses do not, and attempting it otherwise wastes time and creates a bad record.

2. Earn brand mentions in text. Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. Brands in the top quartile for mentions averaged 169 AI mentions; the next quartile averaged 14. Being named in text, repeatedly, across many sites, is the strongest lever measured.

3. Publish pages a model can quote. The GEO research from Princeton, IIT Delhi and Georgia Tech built GEO-bench across 10,000 queries and 25 domains and measured what lifts source visibility inside generated answers: quotations +27.2 percent, statistics +25.2 percent, fluency +24.7 percent, cited sources +24.6 percent. Keyword stuffing scored below baseline. Specificity is the mechanism.

4. Do not block the crawlers. Retrieval requires access. Cloudflare’s managed robots.txt disallows AI training crawlers by default configuration for customers who enable it, and over 1 million customers had AI bot blocking turned on when Cloudflare announced the feature. Check your robots.txt and your CDN bot settings before assuming a content problem.

Tactic Effort Evidence
Complete LinkedIn company presence Low Cited in 14.3% of ChatGPT Search responses
Genuine Reddit participation Medium, ongoing 11.97% of US ChatGPT citations
Brand mention acquisition (PR, roundups, podcasts) High 0.664 correlation with AI visibility
Statistics and quotations on your own pages Medium +25.2% and +27.2% visibility in GEO-bench
Unblock AI crawlers One hour Retrieval requires access
llms.txt file Low No measurable effect (see below)

What does not work

Schema markup does not qualify you for AI answers. Google’s own documentation states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special schema.org structured data to add. The same logic holds for ChatGPT: there is no markup that registers you.

Stuffing your brand name into pages does not work either, and the GEO benchmark measured it going backwards. Buying “AI visibility” listings on directories nobody cites does not work. Paying for a Wikipedia page you do not qualify for does not work and can backfire.

What we’d do

TACK™ treats this as two workstreams running together. The first is presence: audit where your category is discussed, fix the profiles that are cited most, and build a mention acquisition plan aimed at text mentions rather than links. The second is quotability: rebuild the pages buyers ask about so each one opens with a direct 40 to 60 word answer and carries named, cited figures a model can lift verbatim.

Then measure. Not rankings, but what share of your target questions produce an answer that names you, tracked monthly by assistant. That is Get Found, and it connects to Get Leads because a mention that sends a visitor to a page with no next step is wasted. See the capability set or the case studies. Engagements start at $5,000 per month.

Common mistakes

Astroturfing Reddit. Promotional accounts get removed and the mentions vanish. Participation has to be real to persist.

Optimizing for one platform’s current source mix. Reddit’s ChatGPT share went from 60 percent to 10 percent in about two weeks. Diversify.

Measuring nothing. If you cannot state what percentage of your target questions currently name you, you cannot tell whether any of this worked.

Blocking crawlers by accident. Many sites disallowed AI bots during 2024 and 2025 and never revisited it. Check before you spend on content.

The bottom line

ChatGPT mentions come from being named in the sources it reads and from publishing pages specific enough to quote. Fix crawler access, build presence on LinkedIn and Reddit, pursue text mentions over backlinks, and put real numbers with real citations on every page.
