The short answer

Yes for Google rankings, less for AI citations. Only 1 in 6,671 pages with zero referring domains gets over 1,000 monthly visits. But across 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks. Build links for search, mentions for assistants.

The evidence for search

Ahrefs studied roughly 14 billion pages and found 96.55 percent get no traffic from Google. Among the reasons: no backlinks. The specific figure is stark. Roughly 1 in 6,671 pages with zero referring domains achieves more than 1,000 monthly search visits, and the ones that manage it typically target very low-difficulty terms or sit on high-authority domains with strong internal linking.

That is a correlation, not proof of causation, and Ahrefs says so. But at the extremes it is decisive. Pages with no links from anywhere very rarely rank for anything contested.

What has changed is the shape of the requirement. Link volume is no longer the lever it was a decade ago. Getting a handful of genuinely relevant referring domains, from sites your buyers read, does more than a hundred directory listings. The correlation between referring domains and search traffic holds, but it is a threshold effect at the low end more than a scoreboard at the high end.

The evidence for AI answers

This is where the picture shifts. Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands to see which signals correlated with appearing in Google AI Overviews. The ranking of correlations:

Signal Correlation with AI Overview visibility
Branded web mentions 0.664
Branded anchor text 0.527
Branded search volume 0.392
Domain Rating 0.326
Referring domains 0.295
Backlinks 0.218

Branded web mentions correlated roughly three times as strongly as raw backlinks. The top three signals are all language signals rather than link signals, which fits how these systems work: they are trained and grounded on text, and a brand named repeatedly across the corpus is a brand the model can retrieve.

The distribution is brutal. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI mentions; the next quartile averaged 14. Twenty-six percent of the brands studied had zero AI Overview mentions at all.

The rule for where to put your effort

If you have fewer than roughly 50 referring domains, links first. You are below the threshold where organic rankings are achievable on anything competitive. Priority is a small number of relevant, editorially given links.

If you already rank on page one, mentions first. Links are doing their job. The gap is being named in the places assistants read. Google AI Overviews draw heavily from top-ranked pages: 52 percent of AI Overview citations come from top-10 results and 90 percent from the top 30, with a number one ranking carrying roughly a 58 percent citation probability. If you are already there, mentions are the remaining lever.

Either way, keep it policy-compliant. Google’s spam policies define link spam as creating links primarily to manipulate rankings and list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as a violation, unless qualified with rel=”nofollow” or rel=”sponsored”. Paid placements are legal and useful for referral traffic. They are not a ranking tactic.

One practical consequence: the audit order changes. Pull referring domains first to see whether you clear the floor. If you do, stop counting links and start counting how many times your brand name appears in text across the web, because that is the signal correlating with the surface where your buyers now ask their questions.

What a mention strategy looks like

Mentions are not links, and the tactics differ:

  1. Be answerable in the sources assistants read. Citation patterns concentrate. Semrush tracked 230,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity over 13 weeks and found Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube and Wikipedia dominating the cited-domain lists across platforms.
  2. Publish data others quote. Original numbers get cited by name. Commentary does not.
  3. Get named in roundups and comparisons. “Best X in Y” pages are heavily used as grounding for recommendation queries.
  4. Keep your own pages quotable. A direct answer in the opening paragraph, named figures, cited sources.

What we’d do

TACK™ runs links and mentions as one program with two outputs, because the acquisition work overlaps: publishing something worth citing earns both. Practically, we audit referring domains for the threshold problem first, since a site under the link floor cannot rank and therefore cannot be cited by AI Overviews either. Then we shift weight toward mention acquisition and quotable assets.

That is the core of Get Found, and it feeds Get Leads because a citation landing on a page with no clear next step is a wasted mention. See the capability set or the case studies. Engagements start at $5,000 per month.

Common mistakes

Buying links. A policy violation, and at 0.218 correlation with AI visibility it is a poor purchase even if it worked.

Counting backlinks instead of referring domains. A thousand links from four sites is four sites. Report referring domains.

Assuming links solve AI visibility. They correlate weakest of the six signals measured. If you rank well and still do not appear in AI answers, more links is the wrong response.

Ignoring links entirely because “AI is the future.” AI Overviews cite top-ranking pages 52 percent of the time. Rankings still gate citations, and links still gate rankings.

The bottom line

Backlinks still matter for Google rankings, and rankings still gate AI citations. But for visibility inside AI answers, branded mentions correlate roughly three times more strongly than backlinks. Get above the link threshold, then spend the marginal effort on being mentioned rather than linked.
