The short answer AEO and GEO describe the same work with different emphasis. AEO targets being the answer to a specific question. GEO targets being cited across generated responses. If you sell on question-shaped queries, start with AEO. If you sell into long research journeys, start with GEO. Most businesses need one program covering both. What actually drives.
The short answer
AEO and GEO describe the same work with different emphasis. AEO targets being the answer to a specific question. GEO targets being cited across generated responses. If you sell on question-shaped queries, start with AEO. If you sell into long research journeys, start with GEO. Most businesses need one program covering both.
What actually drives the number
Before you split a budget, know what each term actually refers to and what the evidence says works.
GEO has a research base. AEO has a practice base. Generative Engine Optimization was named in a 2023 paper from Princeton, IIT Delhi and Georgia Tech, which built GEO-bench, a benchmark of 10,000 queries across 25 domains. The published results showed optimization methods lifting source visibility in generated answers by up to 40 percent, with up to 37 percent measured live on Perplexity. Answer Engine Optimization grew out of featured-snippet practice and has no equivalent benchmark, which is why the terms get used interchangeably by vendors.
The tactics that moved the needle are content tactics. In the same study, adding statistics lifted position-adjusted visibility 25.2 percent, adding quotations 27.2 percent, and improving fluency 24.7 percent. Keyword stuffing decreased visibility. That is the single most useful finding in the field: the thing that gets you cited is specificity, not markup.
Surface volume differs sharply. Google AI Overviews reach around 2 billion monthly users, per figures compiled in Semrush’s 2026 AI SEO statistics. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users, announced February 2026. AEO work skews toward the Google surface. GEO work spreads across assistants where the answer is composed from many sources.
Click behavior differs too. Semrush measured 1.4 external links clicked per ChatGPT visit against 0.6 from Google, and reported AI search visitors converting at 4.4 times the value of traditional organic visitors. Meanwhile Pew Research found only 1 percent of visits produced a click on a link inside a Google AI summary. A citation in a chat assistant is more likely to produce a visit than a citation in an AI Overview.
| AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Own the direct answer to one question | Get cited wherever an answer is generated |
| Primary surface | Google AI Overviews, voice, snippets | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude |
| Evidence base | Snippet practice, no public benchmark | GEO-bench, 10,000 queries, up to 40% visibility lift |
| Unit of work | A question and a 40–60 word answer block | A topic and the sources that define it |
| Click potential | 1% of visits click an AI summary link | 1.4 links clicked per ChatGPT visit |
| Measured by | Answer capture rate per query | Share of citations across assistants |
How to tell which applies to you
Choose AEO first if your buyers arrive on question-shaped queries with a short path to purchase. Local services, insurance, urgent care, repair, anything where someone asks one question and then calls. Your job is to be the block that gets lifted, which means a direct answer in the first 60 words of the page and nothing before it.
Choose GEO first if your buyers research for weeks, compare vendors, and never search your brand until late. Professional services, B2B software, manufacturing, high-ticket ecommerce. Your job is to be one of the sources the assistant keeps pulling from as it builds a shortlist.
Run both, weighted equally, if your organic traffic has declined while your rankings held. That is AI answers absorbing your clicks on both surfaces at once, and neither program alone fixes it.
One thing that should not enter the decision: markup. Google’s Search Central documentation states plainly that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema.org structured data to add. Any vendor whose AEO or GEO product is really a schema generator is selling packaging.
What we’d do
TACK™ runs these as one program rather than two line items, because the asset is identical: a page that answers a real question with specifics a machine can quote.
The build order we use: pull the 40 to 60 questions your buyers actually ask, one page each. Open every page with a direct 40 to 60 word answer, because that is the block engines extract. Load the body with named numbers, cited sources and quoted language, since that is what the GEO benchmark showed moves visibility. Then measure citations by assistant, monthly, so you can see which answers name you and which name a competitor.
That is Get Found, and it feeds directly into Get Leads, because a citation that lands on a page with no clear next step is a wasted mention. See our full capabilities. Engagements start at $5,000 per month.
Common mistakes
Treating them as competing purchases. Buying an “AEO platform” and a separate “GEO platform” duplicates the same content work twice. Cost: two subscriptions at $300 to $1,500 a month each, with one program’s worth of output.
Optimizing for volume instead of specificity. The benchmark result was clear: statistics and quotations lifted visibility 25 to 27 percent while keyword stuffing lowered it. Publishing 40 thin pages a month is the fastest way to be ignored by both answer engines and search. Cost: a full content budget with no citations to show.
Measuring nothing. Most teams still report rankings and sessions, neither of which shows whether an assistant named you. If you cannot say what percentage of your target questions cite you today, you cannot tell whether any of this is working. Cost: an indefinite spend with no exit criterion.
The bottom line
The distinction between AEO and GEO matters less than whether your pages contain specific, quotable, verifiable answers. Lead with AEO for short question-to-purchase journeys, lead with GEO for long research journeys, and build both on the same content asset.
